It's the year 2358. The limited supply of oil finally reached a critical level and WW3 broke out between the western super powers and the middle east over control of the remaining supplies. In the resulting conflict much of US, Asia and Europe were irradiated and became barren and arid. The remaining population survived by living underground using Thorium as an energy source.
The desert lands above are plagued by the mutated animals that excret absorbed Thorium dust lingering in the atmosphere into solid pellets in their bodies, mankind then used this quirk of nature to power their civilization. Of course most of mankind has abandoned weapons of any sort, fearful of another war, so the task of aquiring the Thorium pellets is dangerous and for many years was only attemped by foolhardy individuals in heavy radation-shielded suits.
Twelve long years after the war, the radiation finally subsided enough for mankind to walk freely with limited protection against the elements and residual radiation in the air. Scientists have also improved existing Nano-Armour so it can be merged with certain high-frequency brainwaves to create certain effects. This Nano-Armour is powered by Thorium like most of mankind's technology.
