Here's an open-source tutorial that will explain how to create destructible terrains, like those in Red Hero or Worms, very easily. You are free to use this for your own games, and credit is recommended but not required. Get the .gmk and look at it (this can be opened in GM8 Lite); press F1 in game for help and controls.

UPDATE: I have made minor changes to the .gmk as of 10/30/09. No game behavior was changed; just extra documentation added and general game settings tweaked.
