Demonstration of GMPokey. During the 😬s and early 90s, home computers used rather primitive sound chips to produce music and sound effects. Having limited amounts of channel, frequency, distortion and volume parameters at their disposal, game developers squeezed through all sorts of corners in an attempt to produce interesting sounds. Wave sound and MIDI banks with instruments were not yet there - sounds were created on the fly.
The POKEY chip was used by some Atari home computers and a number of arcade hall machines in the early 😬s. The GMPokey extension reproduces the sound of this chip. You can record your sounds as wave files, but you can also dynamically create sound during your game - ideal for making retro-style sound effects.
No wave files are contained within this demo - all sound is generated real-time through a few simple commands. The GMPokey extension and this demo can be downloaded here:
